The opera takes place between the tension of a veristic script, calling for a set design --with real elements to support the action, and an appeal to transcendence that music gives to the show. In this work, the scene gave life to some content of the libretto with images that were almost pamphleteering, but essentially plastic.
In the first act, the scene suggests fragile “crystal” columns and the nobility, just about to face the French Revolution, is shown with a semi-transparent clothing that lets you see your underwear.
The second act, during the French Revolution, shows a sky populated transparent clothing of nobles, and a blade of blue sky opens a new horizon. The third act is a trial hall and foreshadows the elements that will be used in the fourth act.The fourth act is a jail cell, which, in the view of the protagonists, is not a prison, but the door of liberation.
